What is Backflow?

 

An undesirable reversal of water flow of non-potable water or other substances through a cross connection potentially contaminating the public water system.

 

What is Cross connection?

 

A temporary or permanent connection between a public water system and a consumer’s water system or any other water system (i.e.- Wells, HvAC chillers, Water parks, Irrigation Sys.,etc.)

 

What is a backflow preventer?

 

A backflow preventer is a means to prevent backflow, either through piping arrangement (air-gap) or by use of a mechanical device (pressure vacuum breaker, double check valve, reduced pressure zone, etc.)

Why do Backflow preventers have to be tested periodically?

Mechanical Backflow Preventers have internal parts that are subject to wear and brakeage due to weather or internal friction from the flow of water.
